Immortality is a concept that is contrasted or compared with God. God is immortal. He is, and always will be. When God created us, humans, he created us in His image. Did He create us mortal or immortal?

Sin, Evil, Death, Dying, and What Happens After

This series addresses an age-old concern that we all have: the concern for sin, evil, death, and what happens after we die. Is there hope after death? When God created us, humans, he intended for us to live forever in a loving relationship with him. But this relationship has been broken by sin.

Here, we address the origin of sin, and we look more closely at death and dying.

But, instead of looking at death negatively, we look at it in the context of hope, the promised hope based on what Jesus did for us when he died and came back to life again.

Inviting God’s Presence

Holy Father, give us a clear understanding that we may live in harmony with your divine will for us. In Jesus Name Amen

As the crowning act of His physical creation. God created man. In poetic language Genesis 1: 27 declares

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)

The biblical story of Creation clearly teaches that God made both man and woman in His image. Though they were to have different biological functions, they were made equal with total dependence on God. However, different from God, they were not immortal, for only God is immortal according to 1 Tim. 6:16 which says:

16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. (I Timothy 6:16)

Nevertheless, had they Adam and Eve stayed in a trusting and loving relationship with God, their Creator, they could have lived eternally.

MEMORY VERSE: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7).

IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, God gave Adam and Eve the following warning in Genesis 2:16-17

16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;

17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)

God warns “you will surely die”

Contradicting God’s statement, according to Genesis 3:4 Satan promised them,

4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “ (Genesis 3:4)

So, God says if you do this you will die. Satan says if you do this “You surely will not die! God’s warning and Satan’s promise give us two different views about death and dying. Who is telling the truth? Whom do you believe?

This contradictory idea did not remain in the Garden of Eden, it continues to this day.

Many people try to harmonize Satan’s promise with God’s warning. They argue that the warning “‘You will die” only relates to the body, which can be killed. And that Satan’s promise, “ ‘You for sure will not die!’ ” is talking only about the spirit, which they believe lives forever.

Can the contradictory words of God and Satan be harmonized? Did God mislead Adam and Eve?

Can God’s words and Satan’s lies agree?

Do we have a spirit, an immaterial soul that consciously survives physical death?

There have been many philosophical and even scientific attempts to answer these questions.

But, in reality, as Bible-believing Christians, we must understand that our God, the one who created us knows everything about us as expressed in Psalm 139. Take time and read all of it.

For now, here is what it says in Psalms 139:1-4

1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off.

3 You comprehend my path and my lying down And are acquainted with all my ways 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. (Psalms 139:4)

So, if we want answers, where should we go?

We must look to the Bible, and the Bible only to find the answers to these critical questions.

Thus, in these lessons, we will discover how the Old Testament defines

Human nature and what happens when

Human beings die.

God created humans and animals with some similarities and differences. What are they? Find out in Day 2: A Living Being
