BURNING FOREVER?  The eternal destinies of the righteous and the wicked are different. The righteous, those that do good, receive eternal life. In contrast, the unrighteous, those who do evil, will receive eternal death. Does eternal death mean the wicked exists in an eternally burning hell?

This series addresses the concerns we all have: the concern for sin, evil, death, dying, and what happens after we die. Is there hope after death? When God created us, humans, he intended for us to live forever in a loving, peaceful relationship with him. But this relationship has been broken by sin.

Here, we address the origin of sin and look more closely at death and dying.

But, instead of looking at death negatively, we look at it in the context of hope, the promised hope based on what Jesus did for us when he died and came back to life again.

Inviting the Spirit of God

Heavenly Father, we invite your Holy presence. Let us not allow traditional teaching to cloud our minds so that we do not get a clear understanding.

In Jesus’ Name Amen

The traditional teaching regarding what happens to the wicked has been tainted and manipulated by the hands of the evil one, Satan. It is true that the righteous receive everlasting life, and the other group will experience God’s painful judgment of condemnation.

But the manner in which this judgment takes place is laced with the lie of Satan initiated in the Garden of Eden, when he said in Genesis 3:4 You shall not surely die.

This is why Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:21

21 encourages the Thessalonians to Test all things; hold fast what is good. (I Thessalonians 5:21)

Or as someone has said, extra the best and leave all the rest.

Different from the Thessalonians the Bereans were diligent in extracting that which was best. For Paul expressed in Acts 17:11

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11)

This is exactly what those who are looking for truth must do.(Split)

The Italian poet Dante Alighieri a·luh·gee·ree who live from A.D. 1265–1321 wrote a very famous poem called The Divine Comedy. This poem was about a fictional journey of the soul after death. In the poem, the soul went either to hell, which was an eternal inferno deep within the earth. Or the soul went to a place called purgatory. In purgatory, the soul is bathed in flames to purge or cleanse them from sin. After the soul’s sins are burned away in purgatory, that soul was allowed to ascend to heaven or to Paradise to be in the presence of God.

Now of course this poem was fiction, it was a made-up story that came out of the mind of the poet.

Although only a fictional poem, the words of this poet end up having a great influence on what Christians believed and on especially what Roman Catholics believed happens to the soul after death. Unfortunately, these false ideas continue to be a part of the teachings of some churches today, particularly the Roman Catholic church. They maintain that the human soul is immortal, therefore it remains alive after death.

Thus, upon death, the soul goes to hell, purgatory, or directly to heaven.

Many Protestants also believe that the soul is immortal, and thus never dies. But in contrast to Catholics, many Protestants believe the soul goes directly to heaven or hell after a person dies.

The False ideas about what happens when we die have caused Christians to believe many of Satan’s lies.

This big lie of eternal punishment and of the perpetual suffering of the wicked in hell is built on the satanic deception expressed by Satan in the Garden of Eden: “ ‘You will not surely die ” (Gen. 3:4, NKJV).

In this series, we will deal with some of these unbiblical ideas, as well as the biblical view of what happens when we die.
